The word “aphasia” is derived from the Greek “aphasía” and means “loss of speech” or “being unable to speak.” Waking up suddenly and no longer being able to speak is a terrifying experience that people with aphasia go through. The goal of the support group is to discover new perspectives for oneself through interaction with others in similar situations and to foster social connections. The focus is on sharing experiences and discovering strategies that can be helpful in everyday life.

The club was founded in 1964 as a sports club for people with disabilities; it has approximately 200 members, about 160 of whom are active participants, and includes the following groups:

• Swimming with Water Aerobics (upon request)

All groups are led by certified and specially trained instructors and are recognized by health insurance providers as rehabilitation exercise groups. A doctor’s prescription is required to participate in the exercise groups. The cardiac rehabilitation group is continuously supervised and monitored by a doctor.

The club fosters a sense of community through events such as one-day club outings, end-of-season outings, Advent celebrations, and meetings.

In the cardiac rehabilitation group, people with cardiovascular diseases exercise according to their own fitness levels under medical supervision and with targeted guidance from qualified sports therapists.

To participate, you must have a corresponding prescription from your doctor that has been approved by your health insurance provider (or pension insurance provider following rehabilitation).

Living Together – Learning Together

In 1986, parents of children with disabilities formed the Association for the Promotion of Inclusive Education for Children with and without Disabilities (Verein zur Förderung der gemeinsamen Erziehung behinderter und nichtbehinderter Kinder e.V.) in the Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen district, with its headquarters in Geretsried. The association currently has 90 members, about half of whom are parents of children with disabilities. We are a self-help group whose members have experience with disabilities in areas such as preschool, school, vocational training, employment, recreational activities, sports, music, and dealing with government agencies—experience that we can share. We also serve as a point of contact for parents and people with disabilities who are seeking help in navigating life with a disability or looking to connect with others.

Through our participation in the working group for people with disabilities and other committees, we aim to improve the situation of people with disabilities in the county.

The association supports the Bavarian State Working Group (LAG) “Living Together – Learning Together” e. V. and the Inclusion Network. Together, we promote the inclusion of people with disabilities in various areas of life in Bavaria.

Through our donations, we provide targeted support to institutions and organizations that also share this goal.

Systemsprenger – Support Group for Parents and Caregivers of Children with ADHD and Autism

We are parents and guardians of children who have been diagnosed with ADHD and/or autism, as well as the usual comorbid conditions and behavioral issues, and for whom there are also suspected diagnoses.

We are the parents of “special” children who don’t fit into the social system—there’s no category for them, AND we don’t want them to be pigeonholed either.

AD(H)S Self-Help Group for Adults 

Attention-deficit disorder with or without hyperactivity—AD(H)D for short—is a genetic condition that has both advantages and disadvantages. Adults can be affected to a very mild degree or to a severe degree. Colloquially, they are called “daydreamers” or “fidgeters.”

Since this condition affects people to varying degrees throughout their entire lives, many adults with ADD or ADHD struggle with problems at work, within their families and relationships, with social interactions, and, not least, with their own self-esteem.

A free ADHD support group for adults, with a maximum of eight participants, is designed to give those affected the opportunity to share experiences and receive support. It also helps them realize that they are not alone in facing these challenges.

“Glücksklee’ckse Family Reunion” – Families of Children with Down Syndrome         

We are a warm and welcoming family group that specializes in supporting children and families with Down syndrome and other disabilities.

Our main goal is to organize afternoons spent together that are filled with activities, music, crafts, games, and fun. At the same time, we want to provide a space for sharing experiences. We support new families in every aspect, from coping with the diagnosis to early intervention and legal matters. Our strength lies in sharing our own experiences.

Volunteer counseling for people who are hard of hearing, deaf, or have acquired hearing loss later in life, as well as cochlear implant users—including sessions in sign language—takes place every second Monday of the month from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Advance registration is requested.

Self-Help Association for Cleft Lip and Palate Malformations

One of the main goals of our self-help association is to educate all those affected and interested parties about the nature of the disability and rehabilitation options.

Through our central counseling center, located in Hüttenberg, parents of affected children and affected adults receive in-depth counseling and are informed about medical rehabilitation options.

In addition, they receive support, have opportunities to share experiences, and access information locally through our regional contacts and groups. These are members who organize regional meetings and are happy to help those newly affected by sharing their experiences. The self-help association publishes informational materials on various topics.

Members are invited to weekend seminars and lectures and receive updates at irregular intervals regarding revisions and changes to the legal texts.

Our magazine, *Gesichter*, is published three times a year and is free for our members.
