Health department offers free hepatitis C tests

The picture shows the entrance area of the district administration office. View of the inner courtyard from the center of the traffic circle. You can see a tin roof supported by red columns. The glass façade and sliding entrance door are in the background. The building is apricot-colored.

In addition to the long-established free HIV tests, the Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen public health department also offers hepatitis C tests, i.e. tests that detect infectious type C liver inflammation. For the test, blood is taken by the doctors at the health department. The result is received a few days later. The test can be anonymous on request. A blood sample can be used to test for HIV and Hep C.

Hepatitis C is an infectious disease that can cause liver cancer if left untreated. The disease is mainly transmitted via blood. However, it is not only drug addicts who share needles, for example, who can become infected. Transmission can also occur through unsafe medical measures such as blood transfusions in countries with poor health care. However, there are now highly effective drugs that can cure over 95% of infections.

The WHO's elimination targets for hepatitis C by 2030, which have also been adopted by Germany, have not yet been achieved. At the beginning of the year, the Bavarian state parliament therefore formulated the eradication of the HC virus in Bavaria by 2030 as a major health policy goal. The state government wants to launch a broad-based campaign in the fight against hepatitis C within the framework of available positions and resources. This involves detecting as many infections as possible and treating as many infected people as possible.

Appointments can be made by telephone on 08041 505-483 or by e-mail to g-amt@lra-toelz.de. Blood samples are always taken on Mondays.
