Apply to exchange your old driving license online

You can apply to exchange your old driver's license electronically. You no longer need to visit the Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen district driving license office in Bad Tölz in person. The new driver's license will be sent to you by registered mail.

Important to know

1. You must have a German paper driver's license in gray or pink or a (still) unlimited card driver's license (issued in the period from 01.01.1999 to 18.01.2013).
2. Your current main residence must be in the district of Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen. 
3. Do you need your new driver's license within the next 4 weeks? If so, please apply for it directly at the driving license office in Bad Tölz. Please book an appointment on the homepage of the district office
4. The driving license office requires a clearly legible copy of your identity card - confirmation of registration is not required - or alternatively your passport including current confirmation of registration - your previous driving license and a current biometric photo of yourself. You must send everything to the driving license office immediately by post . It is not possible to use an electronic photograph. The biometric photo must be printed on high-quality paper. There are various requirements for the biometric photo that must be met, otherwise the photo cannot be used.
5. Once the driving license office has received your documents, you will receive your driving license back by post for a limited period and a cost invoice.
6. A new driver's license can only be ordered once the old license has been returned. Your previous driving license will be returned by the driving license office for a limited period of time.
7. Your new driver's license will be sent to you by registered mail from the Bundesdruckerei in Berlin.

The path from application to your new driving license

1. Fill out the online form. Once you have entered all the details, send the form using the "Send" button.
2. Once you have successfully submitted the form, please print out the electronically sent application form and the photo/signature sheet. Please sign the signature form in the middle of the box provided and send it by post immediately to the driving license office together with the application form, a copy of your identity card or passport, the previous driving license, a current biometric photograph and, if applicable, a certificate for category T and/or the original medical or ophthalmological certificates - if you are applying for an extension of category CE79.
3. If you have any further questions, we will contact you. Please make sure that your contact details in the form (telephone [reachable during the day] and e-mail address) are correct.
4. You will receive an invoice from the driving license office for the fees incurred. Please transfer these fees immediately to the bank account stated on the invoice. In addition, your driving license will be returned to you for a limited period of time, which you can use in Germany until your new driving license arrives.
5. As soon as the driving license office has received all of your documents, your new driving license will be ordered from the Bundesdruckerei in Berlin and sent to your address (main residence) by registered mail.
