Maternity protection
Employees who are pregnant or breastfeeding are entitled to maternity protection. This concerns health in the workplace, special protection against dismissal, a ban on employment in the weeks before and after the birth and protection of income during this period. The trade supervisory offices of the governments monitor compliance with maternity protection.
Employees on fixed-term contracts, in part-time employment, in vocational training, in internships, in marginal employment, as domestic workers, in voluntary service or in sheltered workshops also enjoy maternity protection.

Parental leave and returning to work
Parents who are employed are entitled to unpaid leave from work to look after their child themselves. The entitlement to parental leave is independent of the entitlement to parental allowance and lasts for three years for both parents. During parental leave, up to 32 hours per week can be worked part-time.
We will be happy to advise you personally on all questions relating to the individual planning of parental leave, the division within the partnership and your return to work. Further information can be found in the following links.

Studying / vocational training with a child
Studying or vocational training with a child is possible with organizational talent, support and good advice - for example from the Office for Educational Support at the District Office, university advice centres or the Studierendenwerk. The employment agency also advises on part-time vocational training, an opportunity for parents to combine training and family life.
