Year 2 in the extended transition phase
Information on the differentiated Bavarian school system and initial orientation in the process of choosing a school career
In addition to the existing opportunities and occasions for individual counseling, an extended general counseling service for parents and guardians is offered in Year 2. At an additional parents' evening, parents are informed about the differentiated education system, its permeability and the wide range of options for graduation and subsequent education.
Year 4 in the extended transition phase
Consulting services
In year 4, the elementary school and the secondary schools (Hauptschule/ Mittelschule, Realschule and Gymnasium) hold information events on the educational pathways on offer and the respective school profiles and specializations.
As "transition coaches", the guidance teachers at the state secondary schools and grammar schools support elementary school teachers in advising parents on the transition.
Individual support measures
The elementary school timetable provides for a total of five hours per week of "lessons for individual and joint support" as compulsory lessons in years 1 to 4. In order to meet the increased need for support in year 4, the class group at state schools is divided into support lessons for large classes. It is planned to split the remedial lesson for year 4 classes with more than 25 pupils.
Increasing transparency and reducing performance pressure
The enhanced transfer procedure provides for guideline numbers for performance assessments in year 4 and the prior announcement of dates for performance assessments. It will also allow for a greater number of examination-free learning phases.
Written interim information on the performance level in year 4
The written interim information on the current performance level of the pupils at the beginning of January enables parents to recognize the need for support at an early stage and to discuss suitable support measures with the teachers.
Transition certificate with school career recommendation
At the beginning of May, all Year 4 pupils receive a transfer certificate.
It contains:
- the year-end grades in all subjects,
- the overall average grade from the subjects German, mathematics, home and general studies,
- an assessment of social, learning and working behavior,
- a summary school career recommendation, in which the current suitability for further education is determined.
This ensures that all parents/guardians are aware of their child's suitability for education.
The school career recommendation is based on the overall grade point average in German, mathematics and home and subject teaching.
If the overall grade point average in German, mathematics and local history and social studies is up to and including 2.33, the pupil receives a school career recommendation for attending a Gymnasium. If the overall grade point average in the subjects German, mathematics and home and general studies is up to and including 2.66, the pupil will receive a school career recommendation to attend a Realschule. With an overall grade point average of 3.00 or higher in German, mathematics and home and subject teaching, the pupil receives a recommendation to attend a secondary school.
Transfer to secondary schools
If a corresponding school career recommendation is available, pupils can transfer to year 5 of the respective type of secondary school immediately after attending year 4 of elementary school.
Transfer to secondary schools after attending the trial lessons
Pupils who have not received a corresponding school career recommendation for the desired type of secondary school in their year 4 transfer certificate can, at the request of their parents or guardians, take part in trial lessons at the Gymnasium or Realschule - regardless of the grades achieved in elementary school.
The trial lessons are held in the two subjects German and mathematics. In addition to the written tasks set centrally throughout the country, oral performance is also assessed. The trial lesson is passed if at least a grade 3 is achieved in one subject and at least a grade 4 in the other subject. Parents/guardians will be informed of the result of the trial lesson with reasons.
After passing the trial lessons, pupils can move on to year 5 of the Gymnasium or Realschule.
Strengthening parental responsibility in trial lessons up to the pedagogically justifiable limit
If the trial lessons are not passed, pupils can still transfer to year 5 of the Gymnasium or Realschule if their parents or guardians so wish. The prerequisite is that the pupils have achieved at least a grade 4 in both subjects in the trial lessons. This strengthens parental responsibility in the long term.

Secondary school qualifications in Bavaria
Successful completion of secondary school
This qualification is awarded to pupils who have successfully completed year 9. The successful completion of secondary school is awarded to those who have passed the ninth grade of secondary school. This is the case if the annual report card shows a grade point average (excluding the sports grade) of 4.0 or better and does not contain the grade five more than three times (the grade six counts as two fives).
Successful completion of secondary school in the practical class and German class
Pupils who are at least in their 9th year of school attendance and who attend a practical class or German class have the opportunity to successfully complete secondary school by passing a theory-based final examination.
The final examination is passed if the average grade is 4.0 or better.Qualifying secondary school leaving certificate
The qualifying secondary school leaving certificate is a special performance assessment that pupils can additionally undergo in year 9. At the end of year 9, they have to take a special examination (written, practical and oral) in certain subjects.
Students who achieve an overall grade of at least 3.0 are awarded a certificate for the qualifying secondary school leaving certificate. Participation is voluntary.Intermediate school leaving certificate at secondary school
Among other things, the intermediate school leaving certificate at the Mittelschule entitles students to attend further education, e.g. the Fachoberschule - and is therefore equivalent to the business and intermediate school leaving certificate.
There are several ways to obtain an intermediate school leaving certificate at secondary school:
- The certificate of completion of the intermediate secondary school course certifies the intermediate school leaving certificate. Passing a central final examination at the end of year 10 is a prerequisite.
- Particularly high-achieving pupils in year 9 who do not attend the M branch can achieve the intermediate school leaving certificate at the secondary school in two additional years in so-called preparatory classes ("9+2 model").
- Secondary school pupils who have completed vocational training can obtain an intermediate school leaving certificate in two ways:
- Through the Qualified Vocational Certificate (Quabi). Prerequisites for the Quabi are the qualifying secondary school leaving certificate (Quali), completion of vocational training with an average grade of 3.0 or better and proof of at least sufficient (= grade 4) knowledge of English, which corresponds to the performance level of a five-year course; graduates who completed vocational school before 01.Graduates who completed vocational school before August 1, 2011 can only be awarded the intermediate school-leaving certificate in accordance with the regulations in force until that date with completion of vocational training with an average grade of 2.5 or better and proof of at least satisfactory (= grade 3) English language skills corresponding to the level of a five-year course.
This proof can be provided in particular by the English grade in the certificate of successful or qualifying completion of secondary school or by the English grade in the final certificate of the vocational school, if English is a compulsory subject.
The Quabi certificate is issued by the secondary school at which the Quali was obtained. - Via the vocational school or via a vocational college lasting at least two years.
Degrees for external applicants
Applicants who are unable to obtain the respective qualification at the school they attend or who do not belong to any school can apply to public secondary schools.
- the examinations for the successful completion of secondary school,
- the special performance assessments for the qualifying secondary school leaving certificate and
- the examinations for the intermediate school leaving certificate at secondary school
