Care and support for the child in emergency situations; applying for support

Parents are entitled to support with the care and support of the child living in the household if

• a parent who is primarily responsible for the child's care is absent for health or other compelling reasons,
• the child's welfare cannot be ensured in any other way, in particular by the other parent taking over care of the child,
• the family living space should be preserved for the child and
• offers of support for the child in day care facilities or in child day care are not sufficient.

If these requirements are met and there is no obligation on the part of another social benefit provider, the claim is directed towards the locally responsible youth welfare offices of the districts and independent municipalities, which perform their duties within their own sphere of influence. The type and manner of support and the amount of time spent looking after and caring for the child depend on the specific needs of the individual case.

The aim of this benefit is to maintain a family environment for the child, even if the main caregiver is absent due to illness or other compelling reasons. The aim is to prevent the child from having to be placed outside the family, even if there are no educational reasons for this.
