Motivation for commitment to society

Volunteer Day as a sign of gratitude

Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen district. Taking on responsibility in a club, association, initiative or other form of commitment to a good cause - that's what volunteering is all about. The volunteer office in the Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen district office has an excellent network in many different organizations and also offers low-threshold opportunities to get involved with the FlexHero platform.

Claudia Schneider is one of the volunteers who is regularly there for others and helps to positively shape social coexistence with her commitment. Among other things, she works at Café Miteinand, the inclusion café in Bad Tölz.

In which area of voluntary work are you active?

I've been working at Cafe Miteinand, the inclusive café in Bad Tölz, since December 2019 and I'm the go-to girl for anything that comes up, e.g. working in the kitchen, serving at the table, guiding the young people and much more. I also like to be involved in the parents' council at my son's school. I also volunteer with two other mothers to run the Bad Tölz single parents' get-together once a month, do the shopping, make the preparations, write emails and keep in touch with the mothers. When my 15-year-old son was still small, I joined the meeting as a participant and have now been a group leader for over ten years. I also used to enjoy helping with the Zappelphilipp and church coffee, soup buffets and preparing and following up craft and games afternoons at the Protestant parish. I still like to help out at events there today, if necessary.

That's quite a lot and takes a lot of time. What does your volunteer work give you that makes you willing to volunteer for so many years?

The single parents' group helped me a lot back then, for example how to deal with difficult situations. The feedback from the other participants that the group is good for them is a great motivation for me. I can pass on some of my experiences again. Many worries and problems are similar, e.g. pubescent behavior.

Can you spontaneously think of one of your best experiences as a volunteer?

When there's a special atmosphere in the meeting and the participants open up, it's a really nice "goosebump atmosphere". But various activities such as the herb hike are also special moments for me.

When you look back: What strength or quality have you discovered in yourself or others over time through your volunteer work?

I feel more confident when writing emails. I've learned to accept things, to simply listen and not always have to act. At the beginning, I planned a program, which perhaps didn't turn out that way. Every meeting is different, varied and follows its own dynamic. Today, I can take things more calmly, let things come to me and absorb the atmosphere. I have been helped by the experiences of others and I can now also provide support.

Is there a final sentence you would like to add?

I would like to see more people getting involved so that we can achieve more together. Help and support each other more when others need something. I would also like to motivate everyone to get help and accept it when they are in a low point, for example. Together we are strong!
