For centuries, man and river have struggled to shape the landscape. In many places, man has succeeded in taming the wild river. But between Icking and Wolfratshausen you can still feel the original wildness of an untamed river landscape today. This unique river landscape is the focus of a guided winter hike through the snow-covered Pupplinger Au on Saturday, January 10, 2026.

Accompanied by nature conservation rangers and the area manager, participants discover the quiet, frosty winter world along the Isar. On the six-kilometre tour, they learn interesting facts about the animals and plants that hibernate here, as well as about the historical use of the river by humans. The winter landscape with its glistening blankets of snow and tranquil banks makes the hike a special nature experience.

Meeting point: 10 a.m. at the Icking S-Bahn station
End: around 2 p.m., with the opportunity to stop off at Gasthaus Aujäger (bus connection to Wolfratshausen S-Bahn available)

The route leads over partly rough terrain with gravel, dirt and forest paths (approx. 6 km, 50 meters downhill, approx. 2 hours walking time). Sturdy, ankle-high shoes or rubber boots and winter clothing suitable for the weather are strongly recommended. Grödel, spikes or hiking poles are helpful in icy conditions. A warm drink and a small snack should not be missing from your rucksack.

Notes on participation:

  • Minimum number of participants: 6 persons, maximum 20 persons
  • Dogs are allowed, but must be kept on a leash.
  • Refreshments are at your own expense.

How to get there: The use of public transportation is recommended.

Registration up to 2 days in advance at the Tourist Information Wolfratshausen, Tel.: 08171 214206 or by e-mail: tourismus@wolfratshausen.de.
